Dr. Lonnie Smith not only stands as the preeminent Hammond B-3 organist in jazz today, but at the age of 73, he’s still progressing as an artist, as witnessed by his remarkable new album, appropriately titled Evolution. Of this, The New York Times recently wrote that Smith “seems to be up to something bigger than music, and older, and deeper.” Teeming with his trademark accents, light caresses, bright sparks, and jagged lines, Smith’s Evolution band finds him bolstering his working trio featuring guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Joe Dyson with John Ellis on woodwinds and at trumpeter to be announced.
