help with audition music (i suck)

Hi, I really want to join the jazz band for my school, but I don't quite understand the music that they gave us. here's the link: gunnmusic.org/bucket/jazz/Jazz_Audition_Saxophone_Music.pdf My problem is not of notes and such, but the rhythm and the general sound. I can play the notes, but the combinations of notes sound very alien and dissonant to my ears. Can someone help me try to read this? Or it would be even better if someone could maybe play it and put up a link, but I suppose that would be overkill. Thanks a lot.

    I'll try to post a recording soon...my sax is at school but try to take it slow without swing first then add the sing and speed it up once you get the fingerings and rhythm down.
