Students often ask the following questions, “How do I become a more proficient improviser” or “How do I improve my ability to solo effectively over a tune”, which are very sound questions to ask as a student of jazz. The answer is not simple and different teachers have many approaches to these questions. I believe there are four aspects to creating an effective solo: sound, sense of time, hearing the changes, and the musical ideas themselves. My primary goal as a teacher is to improve these aspects of a students playing, through intensive ear training and a thorough technical development over their instrument. I strive for my students to have equal proficiency over their instrument and ear. Russ offers both saxophone and jazz improvisation lessons.
