Re: Did I get a good one? I think I did.

Just in case the link didn't work, I just bought a 1942 King Zephyr silver plate military edition. Here's the description: "Hello and thanks for looking. Up for auction is a Vintage King Zephyr Alto Sax in excellent condition. It is from approximately 1944 (serial number 259723 with a matching serial number on the neck) and was purchased originally by the US government. I have confirmed with two saxophone specialists that the "US" engraving means it was made for and purchased by the US government. The engraving on the bell also says King Zephyr HN White Company Cleveland O. The engraving has a floral pattern. The horn is silver plated and appears to be all original (I don't know about the corks and some or all of the pads have been replaced at one point). Everything is in excellent condition and everything works excellent. The action is quick and the sound is superb. A very reputable woodwind tech serviced the horn this week and inspected it for leaks and stuck valves, etc. There were a couple pads that needed to be replaced (which is done) and there was a very smal dent on the side of the bell as you may be able to see (which is also taken care of to the point where it is practically un-noticeable). The silver is mostly in tact with signs of age. The mother of pearl keys are all accounted for. There is a high F key. The ligature is also original. The case is not original to the horn but it is an old hard case that has UCONN band in white letters and E-5 (probably an Army pay grade indication-Sargeant). This horn is a great instrument and those looking for a fine example of a 40's Alto Sax, this is a beauty. I can guarantee the horn is in excellent working condition or you can send it back to me for a full refund on the final auction price. " I think I stole it.

very nice martysax! and that's a nice price too! I have a Zephyr as a main alto, just a little newer than yours, and oh its a killer! I think I practically stole mine too, I traded a french horn I paid 200 bucks for in the pawn shop to the music store for it, it wulda cost me 1800 cash to take it otherwise!

Re: Did I get a good one? I think I did.

Thanks Def. It's coming Saturday. I'm having the "Which mouthpiece" happy-anxiety now. I've still got the trusty Meyer 5M, Dukoff SPC D7 and D8, and an old Florida Link 9 or 10*. (Which will be the first?) I've a feeling that it's going to be fun feeling this one out. Any suggestions for a piece that works well with the Zephyr? I used to blow the s*** out of my old Mexi-conn with either Dukoff or Meyer, but could only Swing and Bop with the Meyer.

I usually play a JVW worked Guy Hawkins on mine, but also great is a berg In my expirience. Id try that dukoff you have first from what you mentioned. I've never played one on alto before, but i get a great roar when I want to pairing one with both my King and Conn tenors
