Serial Number

I am looking at a Conn Soprano Saxaphone with serial number 178979 with S above and L below. Can you tell me when and where it was manufactured and a general value?

    Re: Serial Number

That is a Conn New Wonder Series II, which is often referred to as a Chu Berry soprano from 1926. It would have been made in Elkhart, Indiana. The value depends on the condition. Most of these horns were sterling silver plated. A few were gold plated. The gold plated Artist models with the more elaborate engravings are the most valuable. These sopranos from Conn's golden years are quite popular and often sell on ebay for well over $1000 in good condition.
