Is it safe to check a saxophone when flying?

Hi friends,

I'm thinking about taking my tenor with me on a Virgin flight out of LGA. Has anyone ever checked a sax to know that it's safe? I called the airline asking if they could offer some sort of special handling and they said no. I'm inclined to think I wouldn't be able to get it through as a carry on. I have this case:

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated! Thanks!

The best sax cases for airline travel is the BAM Cabin case. You can find the best prices on these online at Saxquest. Here's the direct link:

Oh, and to answer your question. No, it's not safe to check a saxophone on any airline. You'd be better off shipping it to your destination. The case you showed in the link is also too big for most carry-on situations. You really need the BAM cabin as it will even count as carry-on with most smaller express planes too.
