Audition Piece

I'm going to be auditioning as alto for a jazz band in a few months, and I need an audition piece. I'm 14 so I need something playable, but still hard so that it will impress the judges, because the band is hard to get into. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks! :)

I would pick a parker tune out of the Omni book.

Go back to the basics. Pick a piece, memorize it.

Be prepared for them to want more.

I don't know your level of proficiency. If you can, I'd go with Monk and/or Mingus. A couple of short pieces you can memorize that will impress. Peggy's Blue Skylight. Self-Portrait in Three Colors. Ruby My Dear. Stuff in that vein.

There's always the standard fallback; 'Round Midnight!

        Good luck!
