Conn soprano sax SM159xxxL

HI

I'm new to this site and am interested in purchasing a soprano sax for my son
who is a college jazz studies major and tenor saxophonist.  The serial number is: SM 159xxx L and I'm wondering if this is a quality horn that is for a professional and what year it was made.  Looking at serial numbers online, it seems that it might have benn made in the 1930's but maybe it was the 1980's?

The owner does not know much about the instrument, and my research seems to show that Conn has a checkered history.  From the picture, the sax is gold in color, but I do not know if it is laquered or plated.  So, is it worth our while to drive an hour for him to test it out?

If you are wondering why my son isn't posting, he has finals.

Thank you!
