Worn vintage saxophone neckstrap hook ring

Nothing I hate more than finding a near mint horn to refurbish and realizing the original owner used a neckstrap with a metal hook and it has worn 2/3rds the way through the attachment ring.

The "Big Fix" is to heat up the ring, remove it, flip it over, and resolder it. This way, leaving the worn spot on the lower end of the ring and fresh metal where the hook will lay ongoing.

Plastic hooks do not cause this, so this is a metal hook on the  brass ring issue.

I am looking for insightful techs that have a different method.

Once the ring is worn beyound this point, replacement is the only option.

Any suggestions?

Re: Worn vintage saxophone neckstrap hook ring

More specifically, it's a steel strap ring problem.  Brass hooks don't cause the same wear because brass is softer than steel and the wider contact area puts less pressure on the strap ring.  The hook might be the element that absorbs wear.

One solution for protecting a strap ring from wear is to attach a brass repair plate, of the type available at hardware stores, to it using a flathead screw and locking nut.  Proper sizing of the screw is critical in order to keep the plate stable under the torque it will experience with the load of the saxophone on it.  As an added benefit, the four-holed repair plate will provide three options for hanging the instrument (originally suggested as a solution to the "Conn cobra" problem).

Here is what seems to be a very stable, cosmetically appealing, and removable at any time answer to my dilema. The neckstrap choices would be somewhat limited to a larger hook, but the vintage string type with a metal hook covered in a teflon tubing works wonderfully.

Before and after pics attached. This is a less than a dollar solution. The hook was not removed from the horn. This is just an extra one I have in my parts stash.
