vintage conn overhaul

I've been in the market for a new horn for awhile. I tried and tested the YAS-62..great horn...but not $2K better than the 23 I'm already gigging with in church. I do have an old silver plated Conn S/N 71XXX that looks ugly, but plays decent. I would like to have it overhauled, cleaned up, and restored to like new condition. Is this horn worth the cost of a complete overhaul? I paid about $150 for it 5 years ago.

My guess is yes, since it plays decent. If it were mine, I would like it to be in working condition--like new wouldn't be necessary for me.

That serial number would date your Conn sax to 1921-1922. It's a New Wonder Series I. In 1922, Conn made a few changes to the keywork on the alto to eliminate some stuffy notes and clear up some intonation issues. They also added the microtuner neck. If yours has the microtuner neck, then it's worth considerably more and worthy of an overhaul. If not, then I wouldn't suggest putting a great deal of money into it. Jim
