Conn Trannie

Does anyone out there play a Transitional from around 1930? How do these horns sound compared to the Chu Berry and the Naked Ladys? And what combinations of mouthpieces and ligs do you use for a big, fat jazz/blues sound?

    Re: Conn Trannie

I play a '33 alto which is for all intents and purposes a 6M. Guess it sounds pretty much like a 6M, too. I think the player will decide the sound as much as the equipment, but I can say that the old Conns are wonderful horns. I use a couple of modified pieces on the business end, a Lakey with the pea shooter insides taken out and a Rico Graftonite with a semi-high baffle, both fefaced to about 090. I've found that any ligature will work well for me so I eschew the fancy stuff.
