I am not here to discourage you from a martin, i own 2 "The Martin" altos and love the heck out of them. Just thoughti would mention you can pick up a selmer mk 7 tenor for less than 2500, and have a great horn, that is a little more ergonomic than the martin would be. I personally have 2 7's and i got them for less than 2000 each, so its just a thought. I do LOVE MY MARTINS thats for sure :)

I was seriously considering buying a The Martin alto a while back but was warned by fantastic tech guy that the soldered tone holes, which some/most ( all ? ) martins have, can have leak issues. You could get an old Conn for about that price.

It's getting a complete going over and rebuild so I'm not worried about leaks.

Apparently the solder corrodes over time because of an electro chemical process which starts up when the inside of the horn gets wet. thats what I'm told.

If you google 'galvanic corrosion martin tone holes', there's an article worth reading. It may save you a bit of money down the track.

go to shwoodwind.co.uk, he reviews a martin, actually i think its a comm II, and he explains why the tone holes might spring a leak. personally, i dont think its something to avoid buying a horn for

Although you would only have to keep the moisture away from the tone hole seams. there must be something you could paint on there to stop the corrosion in the first place.

I spoke with Steve "Sarge" Stransky and he felt the tone hole issue was a none issue. He's doing the work on the horn and he is selling it to me. I trust him a lot. Thanks for the help, --Frank
