M.C. GREGORY Master Hollywood (-)

The M.C. Gregory "Master" Hollywood mouthpieces were the last mouthpieces to carry the Gregory name.  Gregory also quit using serial numbers on the later versions of these mouthpieces.  The mouthpieces bear a striking resemblance to the earlier Model A and Model B Gregory mouthpieces.  We have seen them in a larger form much like the Model As, and in a "Slimline" form like the Model Bs.  These pieces were probably manufactured from the molds of the Model A and Model B Gregory mouthpieces.  These were also the first M.C. Gregory mouthpieces that did not have a Rico stamp on them.

Charecteristics of Master Hollywood:

  • ""Master" by Gregory Hollywood" stamped at slant on back of mouthpiece
  • Serial number stamped below Gregory stamp on back of mouthpiece on early models
  • Facing stamp on left of table on early models
  • Chamber size and facing length on right of the table on early models
  • Facing number, chamber size, and facing length on back of mouthpieces where serial number used to be on later models
  • Gold metal ring around shank

With the Master Hollywood mouthpiece M.C. Gregory stopped using the letters A and B for facing lengths, and started using M or L, for medium and long facings.  Previous Gregory mouthpiece models are described by their facing number, facing lay or length, and then the chamber size, which is the order they are displayed on the mouthpiece.  On all previous model Gregory mouthpieces this would have looked something like 4A20.  With the Master Hollywood model this sequence changed to facing number, chamber size, and then facing lay or length.  On Master Hollywood mouthpieces the sequence looks something like 420M.  Eventually on the later models Gregory would stop using serial numbers as well.  They would move the facing number, chamber size, and facing lay stampings from the left and right sides of the table to the back of the mouthpiece, where the serial number stamp had previously been.

The interior design of these mouthpieces is practically an exact copy of that of the earlier vintage Model A moutpieces.  The "slimline" models are exactly like that of the earlier Model B pieces.  The final facing work on these mouthpieces is considered by many to be inferior to the earlier vintage Gregorys because it was machine finished instead of hand finished.  Unlike the previous Model A and B mouthpieces, the chamber sizes on the Master Hollywood Gregorys were a little different.  The pieces with the designated 20 chamber sizing were actually larger chamber mouthpieces.  These mouthpieces play very well and are highly sought after.  Another difference is the amount of material used on the beak/bite plate.  The earlier vintage Model A and B Gregory mouthpiece had a very thin amount of rubber here, and it was easy to bite through them.  The later Master Hollywood models used more material in this area.  They still vibrate very well, but there is a noticeable difference between these models and the earlier models.
